Sheep foot roller, also known as “cat foot roller”, refers to a static compaction machine with sheep’s foot-like protrusions evenly distributed and staggered on the surface of the roller. The sheep’s foot roller is a kind of non-smooth roller. The sheep’s foot-like protrusion is higher than that of the bump roller, but its end surface area is smaller than that of the bump roller. Sheep’s foot rollers are used for compaction of earth embankments and roadbeds
Sheep Foot Roller Is Used For
1. Sheep foot roller is used for rolling clay
2. Sheep foot roller belongs to the category of road equipment in construction machinery, and is widely used in the filling and compaction of large-scale engineering projects such as high-grade highways, railways, airport runways, dams, and stadiums, etc. And cohesive soil, roadbed stabilized soil, and asphalt concrete pavement layer.
3. It is worth noting that the sheep foot roller is not suitable for compacting sandy soil, because when the sheep’s foot is pulled out of the soil from the rear of the road, it will loosen the sandy soil that has just been compacted so that it cannot be practically used compaction.
Woking principle of the sheep foot roller
The sheep foot roller is a kind of non-smooth roller. The sheep’s foot-like protrusion is higher than that of the bump roller, but its end surface area is smaller than that of the bump roller. When working, the weight of the rollers acts on the bedding layer through a row of sheep’s feet on the ground. Because the end face of the sheep’s feet is small and the pressure is strong, the soil directly under the end of the sheep’s feet is subject to great positive pressure. In the process of inserting and pulling out, lateral pressure is also applied to the soil, forming a rubbing effect on the soil, which can achieve a better compaction effect.
Advantage
The use of a sheep foot roller to compact the cohesive soil can not only obtain high-density soil but also have the effect of crushing and compacting the paving and filling materials containing unbreakable clods. For non-cohesive soils, excessive positive pressure and lateral pressure will easily cause the soil layer to loosen, making it difficult to compact.
Shortcoming
The disadvantage of using the sheep foot roller is that the surface layer of the soil material will be loosened, especially when the rolling speed is too high, which limits the running speed of the sheep’s foot mill and affects the improvement of productivity.
Composition
Sheep foot rollers are generally towed and are pulled by a crawler tractor. Several sheep’s foot rollers can also be combined in series and pulled by a high-power tractor to improve production capacity. The sheep foot roller is composed of a roller and a rectangular frame. The roller is a closed cylinder formed by coil welding of steel plates. Sand, iron sand, or water can be loaded into the wheel through the sand loading port on the side to increase the grinding weight. The shape and size of the protruding sheep’s feet have a great influence on the compaction effect and compaction quality. There are many shapes of sheep’s feet, and the selection is mainly based on the maximum compactness of the rolled cushion material and the minimum effect of turning over the opposite layer.
